DeterMND's Sport Roadshow Coming to Cushendall
On today Sat 28th Feb 12-4pm
New ground was broken in November, when a historic Gaelic football match took place at the Kingspan Stadium, home of Ulster Rugby to raise funds and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease in support of the charity DeterMND. The unique occasion was the brainchild of former Antrim football captain Anto Finnegan, who was diagnosed with the terminal condition in 2012.
Over 6,200 spectators attended the game and showed their solidarity with former Antrim captain Anto Finnegan in his fight against Motor Neurone Disease. In order to build on the Legacy of the#Gameforanto match in Belfast, the charity has gone on to organize four community events to continue the promotion of deterMND in sports clubs around Northern Ireland.
These free community events will offer people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try new sports and new challenges at their local community centres.
Activities include cycling, boxing & fun agility challenges as well as skill tests for Hurling and Rugby taken by professional sports coaches. Cushendalls GAA club, Ruairi Og CLG will host the first event at their youth club on Saturday 28th February between 12 and 4pm.
Anto Finnegan said, "Game for Anto highlighted for us the unique unifying power of sport. During half time kids from local rugby and GAA clubs played together on the pitch showing how organisations coming together for a good cause. Building on that legacy, we just want people of all ages to try new activities and have a bit of fun so we have organized a number of free family events in 4 community centres across NI which will be hosted by the local GAA club but are open to everyone to join in.”
