Antrim
Senior Hurling League Div1
Ruairi Og
V
Dunloy
Sunday 22nd
April
The game had
originally be scheduled to take place in Dunloy but due to heavy rain the match
was moved to Cushendall at the last minute. Conditions were poor in Cushendall
as well, Ruairi Og settled first and went 2 ahead thanks to a free from Shane
Mc Naughton and a point from play from Paddy Mc Gill. Shaun Dowds and Paddy
Richmond got Dunloy back on level terms. However Ruairi Og were showing the
greater hunger in the poor conditions, Neill Mc Manus thumped over a long range
free, Paddy Mc Gill got his second of the game and Shane Mc Naughton blazed
over the bar with the goal at his mercy after Karl Mc Keegan’s fine run. Paddy
Doherty stopped the rot for Dunloy but another 2 points from Mc Manus frees had
Cushendall in the lead at the break 0-7 to 0-3.
Dunloy got the first score of the second
half when Paddy Doherty tapped over a free from 30 yards but again Cushendall
pushed forward, Mc Manus converted a free and in the 9th minute of
the half Shane Mc Naughton finished brilliantly to the back of the net after
superb inter change play between Karl Mc Keegan, Paddy Mc Gill and Neill Mc
Manus. Shaun Dowds got a point from play for Dunloy however Cushendall were
rampant, Neill Mc Manus won and converted 2 frees in a row and Paddy Mc Gill,
having a super game, fired over a sweet point from the right wing. A point each
from Paddy Doherty and Paddy Richmond gave Dunloy hope but again Cushendall
turned the screw, Neill Mc Manus shot for goal was well saved by Gareth Magee
but Conor Carson was in the right place at the right time to finish to the net.
As the game drew to a close there was no respite for Dunloy, Neill Mc Manus
converted yet another free and the final score of the game came from sub Eoghan
Campbell to leave the final score Cushendall 2-13 Dunloy 0-7.
How they
played: In truth Cushendall were on top from start to finish with what was a
very convincing team performance. In goals Ronan Kearney was safe and assured,
in front of him all six backs excelled with Aaron Graffin and Aidan Mc Naughton
the pick of the bunch. Karl Mc Keegan hurled well at mid field and up front
Neill Mc Manus and Conor Carson both put in strong shifts but my man of the
match goes to Paddy Mc Gill who scored three cracking points from play. His
link up play was also out of the top drawer and he was always on hand to
support his team mates.
