Our U16's got the 2015 season off to a flying start today when competing for the inaugural Naomh Padraig Cup in Cushendun.
First up was Loughgiel and we found ourselves against a very strong breeze but the lads started well and got stronger and stronger as the half went on. They played intelligent hurling against the breeze and went in at halftime ahead. This gave them a great platform to move forward and dominate the second half. The final score was 5.10 to 0.04 to the men in the Maroon & White.
In the other semifinal Naomh Padraig, (an amalgamation from the Cushendun, Carey and Armoy clubs) narrowly beat Ballycastle in a tight game to provide the opposition for Ruairí Óg in the Final.
The 3/4th playoff between Loughiel and Ballycastle went the way of the lads from the Shamrocks.
In the Final our lads found themselves playing against the stiffening breeze but they managed to battle against it and turned around with a 4 point lead. In the second half our lads went on to stretch their lead and ran our convincing winners on a scoreline of 3.07 to 1.03 against a game Naomh Padraig outfit.
Captain for the day, Christy Mc Laughlin, was very proud to collect the Naomh Padraig Cup.
Our thanks go to, the referee for looking after all of the games - Liam Mc Bride, Naomh Padraig for the invite, to the ladies for the tea, sandwiches & very popular buns (good job ROBL was over Dorney), to the Cushendun club for the facilities and last but by no means least to ALL of our U16 hurling panel for two very encouraging tough performances against two fine teams.
Well done to Manager Chris Dornan and his great group of lads who played as a team throughout both games. Ruairí Óg Abú
