McAuley Cup Semi Final
1/3/15 in Glen Rovers Armoy
Loughgiel v Ruairi Og
Match report by Chris Dornan and photos from Neal O' Boyle thanks to them both.
The game started with Ruairi Og playing against a stiff breeze and Loughgiel got on the score board 1st with a nice point by midfielder James Campbell. Roain Carey doubled the shamrocks advantage with another neat point from play.
Cushendall who were struggling with the elements, responded with a nice point from play from Shane McNaughton, but this would be the 'Dalls only point in the 1st half.
Loughgiel responded with a converted '65' from Barney McAuley, a point from play from Shea Casey and another point from play from Barney McAuley.
Cushendall were producing no real threat in their forward line, and with the ball not sticking, their rearguard were put under savage pressure and this led to Dan McCloskey knocking over 2 placed balls in quick succession.
Shea Casey added another nice point from play and there was just time for Dan McCloskey to knock over another free to leave the score at the short whistle:
Loughgiel 0-09 Ruairi Og 0-01
The 2nd half started with Eoin Laverty and Dan McCloskey swapping frees.
Mark McFadden knocked over the next score from play for Loughgiel, and in the next play this score was cancelled out by a fine score by Cormac McAlister.
Barney McAuley and Dan McCloskey added a point a piece from the dead ball to push Loughgiel further ahead.
Cushendall tagged over the next 2 points, Shane McNaughton from the dead ball and a nice score from play by Conrad McDonnell.
Loughgiel responded to this with a good point from play by Donal McKinley. Conor Carson and Declan Gillan then traded points respectively before Cushendall scored the last 3 points of the game through Conrad McDonnell and Shane McNaughton with a point from play and a dead ball to leave the final score:
Loughgiel 0-15 Ruairi Og 0-09
How we played:
In the 1st half we struggled with the elements and our forwards couldn't make the ball stick, this led the backs to hit a lot of hopeful clearances which Loughgiel returned with interest. Also we need to stop giving away silly/lazy fouls which we did today and which we were heavily punished from.
In the 2nd half we improved and played better hurling picking off some nice scores. The very strong wind that we played against in the first half had calmed considerably and we seemed to contain Loughgiel better. All in all it was a good run out and thing will improve when it comes to the 1st league match on Easter Sunday.
